On August 5, when the government of Sheikh Hasina was ousted following a mass uprising led by the anti-discrimination student movement, Nobel laureate economist Dr Muhammad Yunus was in a Paris hospital recovering from minor surgery. Despite his hospitalization, key coordinators of the movement reached out to him, urging him to take responsibility for leading the country.

Dr Yunus recounted his experience in a recent podcast interview with Gideon Rachman, Chief Foreign Affairs Commentator at the Financial Times. The interview, part of the Rachman Review podcast, was published in written form on January 30.

"When I received the call, I was still in the hospital in Paris," Dr Yunus explained. "I had been following the news from Bangladesh daily, but the student leaders told me, 'She (Sheikh Hasina) is gone. We need to form a government. Please take charge.'"

Initially reluctant, Dr Yunus declined, saying, "I don't know anything about this. I don't even want to be involved." When asked who had contacted him, he responded, "The students. I had never heard of them before. I tried to convince them to find another leader, but they insisted, 'It has to be you. We haven't found anyone else.'" He urged them to continue searching and to call him again in 24 hours if they were unsuccessful.

The next day, the student leaders contacted him again, stating, "We tried everything but found no one. You must return." Dr Yunus, acknowledging their struggle and sacrifices, finally agreed. "You have fought, bled, and led this movement. Even if I hadn't planned to be involved, I cannot ignore your call. The government must be reformed. I agree to take responsibility."

Later that day, Dr Yunus was surprised when a nurse brought him flowers, congratulating him as the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh. "I asked her, 'Where did you hear that?' She replied, 'It's on all the news channels.'" Shortly after, the hospital director and board members also congratulated him, informing him that he could not be discharged until later that afternoon.

Realizing the urgency of the situation, Dr Yunus requested the hospital director's assistance in preparing for travel. "They need me back in Bangladesh. Can you help me get ready?" The director responded, "Of course, we must listen to you. You are the Prime Minister now." The hospital arranged for his safe departure, ensuring he had the necessary medications and support.

By morning, a French military team arrived to escort him to the airport. "That was the final event before my return," Dr Yunus recalled. Upon landing in Bangladesh, he addressed the nation, calling for patience, peace, and unity. The student leaders had already outlined the new government, setting the stage for a transition of power.

Thus began a new chapter in Bangladesh's history, led by Dr Muhammad Yunus.
