From tea stalls to political circles, one topic dominates discussions—students and young leaders are gearing up to launch a new political party this month. The selection of the party's top six leaders is nearly complete.
A New Leadership Structure
The National Citizens' Committee and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement are leading the initiative for this party's formation. To strengthen its organizational structure, two new leadership positions—Senior Joint Convenor and Senior Joint Member Secretary—are being introduced, in addition to the existing roles of Convenor, Member Secretary, Spokesperson, and Chief Organizer.
Who's Leading the New Party?
Nahid Islam, a key figure in mass uprisings, is set to become the Convenor of the new party, with unanimous support from both organizations. The Member Secretary position, initially a point of contention, has now been resolved with Akhtar Hossain emerging as the preferred candidate. Hossain currently serves as the Member Secretary of the National Citizens' Committee.
For the roles of Chief Organizer and Spokesperson, Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah, both leaders from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, are expected to be appointed.
Meanwhile, as part of a mutual agreement with former members of Islami Chhatra Shibir, Ali Ahsan Zunaid (former President of Islami Chhatra Shibir’s Dhaka University unit) is likely to take the role of Senior Joint Convenor. Nasiruddin Patwari, the current Convenor of the National Citizens' Committee, is being considered for Senior Joint Member Secretary.
Other Key Leaders in the Party
- Beyond the top six positions, other notable figures expected to hold key roles include:
- Samanta Sharmin (Spokesperson, National Citizens' Committee)
- Sarwar Tushar, Tasnim Zara, Ariful Islam Adib (Joint Convenors)
- Anik Roy, Mahbub Alam, Olik Mridha (Joint Member Secretaries)
- Abdul Hannan Masud (Chief Organizer, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement)
Preparations for the Official Launch
A Preparation Committee, consisting of over a hundred leaders from both organizations, has already been formed. The first meeting was held on Wednesday at the National Citizens' Committee’s central office in Banglamotor, lasting from the afternoon until 10:30 pm.
The party's launch event is tentatively scheduled for February 26 at Manik Mia Avenue, and responsibilities for organizing the event have been distributed among different sub-committees. These teams will oversee security, cultural activities, and other logistical aspects. However, as of Friday night (February 21), the party's official name had not yet been finalized.
Nahid Islam's Expected Resignation
Sources indicate that Nahid Islam may resign from his Advisor role in the interim government at any time to take on the position of Convenor in the new party.
Speaking to the media, Sarjis Alam, Chief Organizer of the National Citizens' Committee, stated: "We expect Nahid Islam to join the party, and he has already given his silent approval. However, we must wait until he officially resigns from his current role."
