Bangladesh's per capita income has reached a record $2,820 in the current fiscal year, according to data released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) on Tuesday, May 27.
This marks a significant increase from the $2,738 recorded in the previous 2023-24 fiscal year.
The latest figures show an $82 rise in per capita income compared to the last fiscal year. Previously, the highest per capita income was $2,793 in the 2021-22 fiscal year.
However, a depreciation of the Bangladeshi Taka against the US dollar had prevented further dollar-denominated increases in subsequent years.
According to BBS data, per capita income was $2,793 in FY2021-22, before declining to $2,749 in FY2022-23, and further to $2,738 in the last fiscal year.
The fluctuations in per capita income are largely attributed to changes in the dollar exchange rate. For the current fiscal year, the BBS calculated per capita income using an average exchange rate of BDT 120.29 per dollar, compared to BDT 111.06 per dollar used in the previous year.
In Bangladeshi Taka, the per capita income for the current fiscal year stands at BDT 339,221, up from BDT 304,102 in the previous fiscal year.
It's important to note that per capita income is not an individual's personal earnings. It is calculated by dividing the country's total national income, which includes domestic earnings and remittances, by the total population.
