Tofail Ahmed, the veteran politician and member of the banned Awami League's Advisory Council, is alive but in a 'critical' condition. This information was confirmed by his son-in-law, Dr. Touhiduzzaman.

The former government minister has been undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital since September 27. Family members have expressed dismay over recent death rumors circulating on social media, emphasizing that he is still alive.

Speaking to the media around 9:30 PM on Sunday (October 5), Dr. Touhiduzzaman Tuhin, Tofail Ahmed's son-in-law, stated, "My father-in-law's condition is not good; it is critical. However, his heart is functioning." Dr. Tuhin requested prayers from the public for Tofail Ahmed's speedy recovery.

A student leader in the 1960s and a key figure in the Mass Upsurge of '69 and the Liberation War, Tofail Ahmed has been admitted to the CCU of Square Hospital since September 28 due to various age-related complications. His only daughter, Dr. Taslima Ahmed Zaman Munni, and Dr. Touhiduzzaman Tuhin are providing constant care.

According to family members, the nine-time Member of Parliament suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and was infected with COVID-19 for the first time about three years ago. He later contracted COVID-19 again and suffered at least two more instances of cerebral hemorrhage, which resulted in him losing his memory.

During that time, Dr. Tuhin had indicated that following a stroke, Tofail Ahmed was not in a state to comprehend his surroundings. He spends most of his time lying in bed, sleeping for an average of 18 hours a day. He is unable to walk, has been using a wheelchair for several years, does not recognize people due to memory loss, and his left arm and leg are completely paralyzed, rendering him immobile due to partial paralysis of his body.

Following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, the former Minister of Industry and Commerce, Tofail Ahmed, was named in a case in his home area of Bhola on charges including rioting, vandalism, display of arms, and arson.
