US President Donald Trump has signed several executive orders aimed at reshaping military policies, including a move to eliminate what he referred to as "transgender ideology" from the armed forces, potentially reversing gains in LGBTQ rights.

Trump announced these measures during a Republican congressional retreat in Miami, stating his belief that the military should focus solely on lethality and readiness, free from what he described as "radical gender ideology." His orders included reinstating service members dismissed for refusing COVID-19 vaccines and further curbing diversity and inclusion initiatives within the military.

"To ensure we have the most lethal fighting force in the world, we will get transgender ideology the hell out of our military," Trump declared. He argued that embracing gender diversity compromises discipline, truthfulness, and unit cohesion. The executive order claimed that adopting a gender identity different from one's assigned sex undermines a service member's integrity and conflicts with military values.

The president also extended his crackdown on diversity programs, claiming they undermine merit-based leadership and erode force effectiveness. His directive barred the Department of Defense from endorsing perspectives suggesting that America's foundational documents are racist or sexist and prohibited discussions on gender ideology.

These decisions mark Trump's second week back in the office, coinciding with a Pentagon ceremony welcoming his new defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, a Fox News personality and veteran. "We will execute, Mr President," Hegseth wrote on social media following his confirmation.

The Trump administration's policies represent a reversal of progress made under previous Democratic leadership. In 2016, President Obama lifted the ban on transgender service members, allowing them to serve openly. Trump later reinstated restrictions, sparking pushback from advocacy groups, while President Biden repealed the ban in 2021, affirming that all qualified Americans should be eligible to serve.

While only a small fraction of the military—approximately 15,000 individuals out of over two million service members—identifies as transgender, their removal could exacerbate existing recruitment challenges faced by the armed forces. Former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin criticized exclusionary policies in his farewell address, emphasizing the need for "qualified patriots eager to serve."

Trump's orders also included plans to build a U.S. version of Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system. He praised the Israeli system's success but omitted its limited effectiveness against intercontinental threats, which pose a greater danger to the United States. Trump insisted that the project, which he described as a top priority, would be "made right here in the USA."
