Israel has launched renewed airstrikes on Gaza, disregarding the existing ceasefire. More than 200 Palestinians, including children, have been killed in the attacks, with many others injured.
Qatar-based Al Jazeera television reported this information on Tuesday (March 18th).
In their live broadcast updates, the channel stated that Israel has ended the ceasefire in Gaza and subsequently initiated widespread airstrikes across the blockaded territory.
These intense attacks have reportedly resulted in the deaths of more than 200 Palestinians, with numerous others sustaining injuries. This marks the largest Israeli offensive in Gaza since the ceasefire with Hamas began on January 19th of this year.
Meanwhile, Israel claims that the airstrikes targeted Hamas commanders and political officials.
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority stated that the latest attacks were aimed at senior figures within the Palestinian armed movement.
On the other hand, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced that the renewed attacks commenced after discussions failed.
According to Barak Ravid, a reporter for the US news outlet Axios, Israel resumed its military operation in Gaza after Hamas rejected a US proposal to extend the ceasefire.
Israel reportedly refused to enter the second phase of the six-week initial ceasefire agreement, leading to the current situation where Israel and Hamas are engaged in mediated discussions.
Furthermore, the Israeli military stated that they are conducting extensive attacks in Gaza. They said that under the direction of the political leadership, the (Israeli military) and Shin Bet are extensively striking terrorist targets belonging to the Hamas terrorist organization throughout the Gaza Strip.
