Direct trade between Bangladesh and Pakistan has resumed. Under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement, a Pakistani cargo ship carrying a large consignment of rice is en route to Bangladesh.
This information was reported by Pakistani news outlet The Express Tribune on Saturday (February 22).
According to the report, for the first time, a government-authorized cargo ship has departed from Karachi’s Port Qasim for Bangladesh. The Express Tribune described this as a historic step in bilateral trade.
The report further stated that Bangladesh has agreed to purchase a total of 50,000 tons of rice from Pakistan, which will be supplied through Pakistan's Trading Corporation (TCP). The deal was finalized earlier in February this year.
The rice export process will be completed in two phases. The first shipment of 25,000 tons is currently on its way to Bangladesh, while the remaining 25,000 tons is scheduled to be sent in early March.
Additionally, for the first time, a ship from the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) will anchor at a Bangladeshi port carrying government cargo. This marks a significant milestone in bilateral maritime trade relations.
This initiative is expected to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries and help restore long-dormant commercial ties.
