Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed has stated that, for the first time in the country's history, a political party's registration has been cancelled through a verdict by the High Court.
He made this remark on Tuesday morning (May 13) during a hearing regarding the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Representing the petitioners were senior lawyers Ehsan S Siddiq and Shishir Monir, while lawyer Tawhidul Islam appeared on behalf of the Election Commission.
The case centres around Jamaat-e-Islami's efforts to regain its political registration, which had been revoked. The appeal hearing initially began on March 12, but had not progressed since then.
Previously, on November 19, 2023, the appeal was dismissed due to the absence of the petitioner's legal representative. A petition was later filed to reinstate the appeal. On October 22 of the following year, the court accepted the delay and restored the appeal for hearing.
This legal decision has once again opened the door for Jamaat-e-Islami to pursue the return of its registration and its electoral symbol — the scales.
