The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 has scheduled April 9 to deliver its highly anticipated verdict in the case involving the killing of Abu Sayed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), during the Mass Uprising in July 2024.
The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Mazumder, issued the order this morning after the case had been kept under CAV (curia advisari vult) since January 27.
The prosecution has sought the maximum penalty for the accused, while the defense has argued for their full acquittal.
The legal proceedings involve 30 accused individuals, including high-ranking university officials and police personnel.
During the most recent hearing, six of the accused were produced before the tribunal, including former BRUR proctor Shariful Islam, former assistant registrar Rafiul Hasan Russel and former BRUR Chhatra League general secretary Imran Chowdhury Akash.
Notably, the tribunal had previously issued arrest warrants for 26 fugitives, among them the former Vice-Chancellor of BRUR, Professor Dr. Md. Hasibur Rashid, and the former commissioner of the Rangpur Metropolitan Police.
The prosecution's case centers on the events of July 16, 2024, alleging that the then-proctor forcibly removed students from the campus with the assistance of Chhatra League activists.
It is further alleged that two police officers subsequently fired at Abu Sayed from close range, leading to his death.
The formal complaint was lodged by Sayed’s family on January 13, 2025, and charges were officially framed against all 30 suspects on August 6, 2025.
This verdict is expected to be a landmark ruling concerning the accountability of officials during the 2024 mass movement.
