Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said on Tuesday that the prosecution will file an appeal against the International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) verdict that sentenced former minister and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President Hasanul Haq Inu to 10 years in prison for crimes against humanity.

Speaking to reporters at his office shortly after the judgment was delivered, the Chief Prosecutor expressed clear dissatisfaction with the outcome.

"The prosecution is not satisfied with the judgment and we would appeal to the higher court seeking enhanced punishment for the three charges on which Inu was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment each, as well as challenging his acquittal on the remaining charges," he stated.

Earlier on this day, the ICT-2 bench issued the sentence regarding the killing of six people in Kushtia during the July 2024 mass uprising.

According to the tribunal's ruling, Inu received three separate 10-year prison terms.

Specifically, he was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment under charge number three, and under charge numbers six and seven, he received 10 years of imprisonment each alongside a fine of Taka one lakh for each.

Regarding the fines, the court mandated that the money be paid to the victims as compensation.

However, the tribunal clarified that "the sentences, however, shall run concurrently, meaning the convict will have to serve a total of 10 years in prison."

The prosecution’s intent to appeal signals a continued legal push to contest both the duration of the sentence and the acquittals on other counts brought against the former minister.
