The Australian Fatwa Council has officially declared that the holy month of Ramadan 1447AH will conclude on March 19, marking March 20, as the first day of Eid-ul-Fitr and the beginning of the month of Shawwal.
The council reached this decision following extensive consultations with local and international astronomical observatories.
By analyzing the calculation of the new moon’s appearance, moonset, and overall visibility across Australia and neighboring regions, the council aligned itself with methodologies recognized by prominent global scholarly bodies to ensure a consistent and accurate start to the festive season.
While the Australian National Imams Council and the Fatwa Council expressed confidence in these calculations, they acknowledged that scholarly opinions on moon-sighting can vary.
In a statement, they encouraged the Muslim community to foster unity and respect the diversity of perspectives among different scholars and Imams.
The Grand Mufti of Australia, Dr. Ibrahim Abu Mohamad, joined by member Imams, extended warm Eid greetings to the Australian Muslim community.
In their message, the leadership emphasized a spirit of compassion, urging citizens to remember those in need—particularly the people of Gaza—through prayers and charitable donations.
They further encouraged Australian Muslims to engage with their neighbors to share the peaceful and authentic values of Islam during the celebration.
