City Corporation workers attempted to erase satirical graffiti of ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from a metro rail pillar near the Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University.
However, students intervened upon discovering the act. The incident, which occurred late Saturday night (December 28), has sparked heated discussions on social media.
Umama Fatema, spokesperson of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, wrote in a Facebook post, "The proctor must resign. I don't want to know whether the prescriptions are from NSI or RAW."
Raising her voice, she further questioned, "Who dares to erase Hasina's graffiti?"
Earlier, late Saturday night, some City Corporation workers arrived with a crane to erase the satirical graffiti of Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Mujib from a metro rail pillar near the Raju Memorial Sculpture. They managed to erase Hasina's face partially, while Mujib's graffiti was entirely erased. However, the students' protest forced them to halt their work.
The students stated that the graffiti of Sheikh Hasina symbolized a "pillar of hate," representing the memories of the July Revolution. Upon discovering the attempt to erase it, the students informed the proctor. The proctor reportedly claimed that intelligence agencies had directed him to have Sheikh Mujib's and Sheikh Hasina's images removed.
Subsequently, the proctor contacted the Estate Office, which involved the City Corporation and metro authorities to take action. However, due to student resistance, the attempt was unsuccessful.
