For the first time since the 2014-15 season, Australia has reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With a decisive victory in the Sydney Test, Australia won the series 3-1 against India.
India was bowled out for 157 early on the third day, setting a target of 162 runs for Australia. The Aussies reached the target with six wickets in hand, marking their first Border-Gavaskar Trophy win in a decade. Alongside this triumph, Pat Cummins' team also secured their spot in the Test Championship final at Lord’s, following South Africa.
The outcome of the Sydney Test was apparent by the second day, with the match likely to conclude on the third day. Australian bowlers quickly dismantled the remaining Indian wickets, with standout performances from pacer Scott Boland, who took six wickets for 45 runs—his second five-wicket haul in Test cricket—and Pat Cummins, who claimed three wickets.
In India’s second innings, only Rishabh Pant managed a significant contribution, scoring a brisk 61 off 33 balls.
Chasing 162, Australia started well with an opening partnership of 39 runs between Marcus Harris and Usman Khawaja. Despite a brief wobble losing two quick wickets, Travis Head and debutant Beau Webster steadied the ship, leading Australia to victory. Head remained unbeaten on 34, while Webster scored an unbeaten 39. For India, Prasidh Krishna took three wickets.
Earlier, India, after winning the toss and opting to bat, were bowled out for just 185 in their first innings, with Australia's bowling attack dominating. India managed to bowl out Australia for 181, gaining a slender four-run lead. However, Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah left the field after bowling just 10 overs due to an injury and was unable to bowl in the second innings, affecting India's chances.
