The world-renowned Finnish telecommunications giant Nokia has announced a significant plan to reduce its global workforce.

According to various international media reports, the company intends to cut approximately 14,000 jobs in phases as part of a massive cost-cutting and structural reorganization initiative.

This figure represents nearly one-fifth of Nokia's current total workforce, marking one of the largest labor contractions in the tech sector in recent times.

Impact on Global and Regional Hubs
Nokia currently employs just over 74,000 people worldwide. A significant portion of its operations—approximately 17,000 employees—is based in India across various tech centers and research units. Market analysts fear that this global restructuring could have a severe negative impact on the Indian workforce.

The layoffs are also set to hit Europe hard. Approximately 1,400 employees in Greece, Italy, Germany, and France are at high risk of losing their positions.

Drivers of the Decision
Experts point to a radical shift in Nokia's internal business structure as the primary driver behind this harsh decision. In 2023, the company merged its Cloud and Network Services unit with the Mobile Networks division.

This merger created significant role redundancies across various departments. Authorities are now moving toward layoffs to make operations more efficient, agile, and cost-effective.

A Broader Trend in the Tech Industry
Nokia’s decision follows a persistent trend of downsizing across the global tech landscape. In recent years, giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google have cut thousands of jobs, while social media leader Meta continues to implement large-scale workforce reductions.

Nokia’s workforce has seen a steady decline over the last decade; in 2018, the company employed approximately 103,000 people, a number that has now dropped to 74,000.

Nokia’s chief rival, the Swedish firm Ericsson, is following a similar path to reduce costs. Ericsson laid off about 5,000 employees last year and is expected to announce further cuts in the near future.

In an era increasingly dominated by Artificial Intelligence and automation, these contractions in the traditional telecom sector signal a shifting reality for the global labor market.
