A powerful rain-belt is expected to sweep across Bangladesh within the next few days, with its effects potentially lasting for up to eight days.
The system is forecasted to bring heavy rainfall to the northern regions and the Sylhet division, accompanied by a high risk of severe thunderstorms.
The Bangladesh Weather Observation Team (BWOT) issued this special bulletin on Saturday night (May 9).
Regional Forecast and Impact
According to the BWOT forecast, while the northern and northeastern parts of the country will bear the brunt of the system, southern districts are expected to remain largely unaffected.
Most Affected: Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions will see the highest activity.
Moderate Activity: Parts of Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Chattogram divisions may experience intermittent rain, though widespread or prolonged rainfall is unlikely in these areas.
Minimal Impact: The southern regions, specifically Khulna and Barishal divisions, will remain mostly stable, with only a slight chance of isolated thundershowers.
Timeline
The weather system is projected to enter Bangladesh through the northern border around May 12 or 13 and remain active until May 20. Meteorologists noted that the rainfall will not be continuous but will occur in intermittent spells across the affected regions.
The BWOT has particularly warned residents in the north and northeast to remain vigilant against intense lightning strikes during this period.
