Today is Historic National Revolution and Solidarity Day

Friday, 07 November 2025 , 08:16 AM

Today is the historic November 7, National Revolution and Solidarity Day. Fifty years ago on this day, Bangladesh embarked on a new journey, emerging from a state of chaos and uncertainty through a joint revolution by members of the armed forces and the general populace.

On November 7, 1975, thousands of people took to the streets of the capital Dhaka and various parts of the country, celebrating that historic moment which led to the subsequent emergence of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman as a statesman.

On that day, the nation once again heard his voice—‘I am Zia speaking.’ The same voice that had announced the call for independence at the beginning of the Liberation War now brought a message of assurance. The spirit of the 1971 liberation immediately resurfaced; it was as if a heavy burden had been lifted from the chest, and the country was filled with a sigh of relief.

Spontaneous processions of revolution and victory filled the streets of the capital and various other cities. Soldiers and common people stood shoulder-to-shoulder, hand-in-hand, chanting: ‘Sepoy-People are brothers; Long Live Bangladesh; Long Live Major General Ziaur Rahman; Sepoy-People, Unite!’

This historic day, therefore, is known as the National Revolution and Solidarity Day, marking a crucial turning point in Bangladesh's politics. Through this revolution, Bangladesh began a new path of emergence from anarchy and uncertainty. On this day in 1975, the then Chief of Army Staff, Major General Ziaur Rahman, freed the country from the web of geopolitical, expansionist, and neo-colonial conspiracies.

In that terrifying moment of national crisis, patriotic revolutionary soldiers and the public united in a mass uprising, defeating the conspirators and bringing General Zia to leadership. The evolution of a self-respecting and distinctive Bangladeshi national culture and identity began after November 7. Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman became the hero of that new dawn of history. Despite various subsequent conspiracies to erase his memory, he has secured a permanent place in the hearts of the common people.
