Shah Ahmed Shafi Takes Charge as Bangladesh’s New High Commissioner to South Africa

Mr. Shah Ahmed Shafi, ndc, has been appointed as the new High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the Republic of South Africa. A seasoned diplomat, Mr. Shafi is a member of the 17th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Affairs) cadre and has served in the Bangladesh Foreign Service since 1998.

He is currently serving as an Additional Foreign Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, where he oversees bilateral affairs with East European countries and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

Mr. Shafi has held various significant positions throughout his diplomatic career, including Director General at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka and Senior Directing Staff (Foreign Affairs) at the National Defence College.

His international experience includes postings at Bangladesh Missions in Nairobi, Los Angeles, Paris, and New Delhi, as well as a tenure as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Bangladesh Embassy in Beijing.

The newly appointed High Commissioner holds a Master’s degree in Sociology from Dhaka University and another in International Relations from the International Institute of Public Administration (IIAP) in Paris.

He also completed the National Defence College's (NDC) Master’s program in Security and Strategic Studies in 2016. Fluent in both English and French, with Bengali as his native language, Mr. Shafi has represented Bangladesh in numerous international forums, further solidifying his reputation as a capable and experienced diplomat.
