UN 'Fact-Finding Team' Launches Investigation

The UN fact-finding team will start their tasks today, Saturday (September 14) to investigate the human rights violations that took place between July 1 and August 15.

Sources say that the United Nations 'Fact-Finding Team' has come to Bangladesh at the invitation of the interim government. If everything goes well in the beginning, the team will meet with the foreign advisor or the foreign secretary.

It is reported that the team will investigate the incidents of human rights violations from July 1 to August 15. It will review the root causes of incidents and make recommendations on what long-term steps can be taken to ensure justice and accountability.

Earlier, UN human rights chief Volker Turk said the UN would investigate the killing of protesters during the recent student protests in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, the human rights organization Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) said that a total of 875 people lost their lives in the movement from July 16 to September 9. The number of injured is more than 30 thousand. 77 percent of the victims died of gunshot.

HRSS has analyzed data sent by 12 national dailies, its data research unit, and volunteers from across the country to prepare the report. According to the reliable information available from the media, hospitals, and various media, the number of victims will be at least 1000.

According to the HRSS report, the type of 772 people's death has been known. Among them:

  • 599 people were shot dead
  • 61 died of burns
  • 85 people were beaten to death
  • 27 died of other causes

According to the statistics of how many people were killed in which division, among 875 people, the highest killed in the Dhaka division. Report says:

  • 540 killed in Dhaka
  • 91 killed in Chattogram
  • 81 killed in Khulna
  • 64 killed in Rajshahi
  • 38 killed in Mymensingh
  • 29 killed in Rangpur
  • 20 killed in Sylhet
  • 13 killed in Barishal

The HRSS report also analyzed the age, occupation, and cause of death of a proportion of those killed. It says:

  • 327 were killed from July 16 to August 3
  • 548 were killed from August 4 to September 9

Many died later while undergoing treatment after the fall of the government.

Of those who were killed, 52 percent were students. 77 percent of those killed by gunshot. 53 percent of the victims were between the ages of 19 and 30.

According to HRSS, the names of 743 of the 875 dead have been identified. They include students, workers, journalists, professionals, members of the law and order forces, children, and women, along with the leaders and supporters of most of the political parties.

At least 107 children, 6 journalists, 51 law enforcement personnel, and 13 women and girls were killed in the agitation.

The report also says that after Sheikh Hasina departed from power, police stations (more than five hundred), government buildings, and minority buildings were attacked, vandalized, arson, and looted across the country.

Of the 875 killed, 619 had information about their age, HRSS said. Out of these 619 people:

  • 107 are children (below 18 years)
  • 327 are young (19 to 30 years)
  • 158 are middle-aged (31 to 50 years)
  • 27 are old (over 50 years)

70 percent of the 619 people are under 30 years of age.

Apart from this, HRSS has received information about the occupation of 352 of the deceased. Among them:

  • 184 students (52 percent)
  • 70 workers (20 percent)
  • 51 law enforcement personnel (5 percent)
