Was Unemployed, Will Be Again After My Term: Asif Mahmud
Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiya, advisor to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, identified unemployment as one of the country’s biggest challenges. He candidly remarked, “I was unemployed before, and I will be unemployed again after my term ends.”
He made these comments on Wednesday (October 30) at a press conference held in the conference room of the Ministry of Youth and Sports ahead of the upcoming National Youth Day.
Asif Mahmud emphasized the importance of the Department of Youth Development’s efforts to address unemployment. “We offer various training programs, from freelancing to World Bank-supported courses,” he said.
“Our goal is to ensure job-oriented training. We don't just train people and let them go; we plan to introduce more targeted programs to equip participants with skills aligned to specific job demands,” he added.
Highlighting vacancies in various government departments, he mentioned that the government is actively working with countries like Malaysia and Italy to explore employment opportunities. “We aim to create at least 500,000 jobs over the next two years and provide training to 900,000 youths, 60% of whom will be women, with the support of the World Bank.”
Asif Mahmud also noted that Bangladesh currently has over 18 million unemployed people, including more than 2.6 million graduates. “Our Chief Advisor has been working on tackling unemployment for a long time. We are pursuing a coordinated effort, and there is good news: several countries willing to collaborate with us have prioritized addressing unemployment. We will respond to this challenge through integrated initiatives.”
