Garment Workers' Protest Turns Violent: Police and Military Vehicles Set Ablaze

Garment factory workers took to the streets with various demands in the Kachukhet area of Mirpur-14, Dhaka. During the protest, they threw bricks and stones at law enforcement officers and eventually set fire to police and military vehicles.

These events occurred around 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 31, turning the Kachukhet area into a battleground and halting traffic completely.

According to eyewitnesses, garment workers protested on the streets of Kachukhet, Mirpur-14, where they attempted to block the road. When police and military personnel attempted to calm them down, the workers began pelting them with bricks and stones. In response, the police resorted to baton charges for self-defense. At one point, the workers vandalized and set fire to military and police vehicles. The area remains tense.

Meanwhile, fire service personnel have already extinguished the fires on the military and police vehicles. Duty Officer Lima Khanam at the fire service control room stated, "We received reports of fires on police and military vehicles in Kachukhet. Two of our units responded and extinguished the flames."

Shah Mohammad Faisal, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhashantek Police Station, commented, "We were on the road from early morning to control the situation. Suddenly, the garment workers began throwing bricks and stones at the police and military from their protest. At one stage, they set the police and military vehicles on fire. The situation is now somewhat under control, with both military and police personnel present at the scene."
