Ex-Ministers and MPs in Exile Spotted in London
After resigning on August 5 in the face of student and public protests, Sheikh Hasina fled to India. Many ministers, MPs, and leaders of various levels of the Awami League went into hiding. While some managed to leave the country, many were arrested. However, the whereabouts of those who fled remained unknown until recently, several of them were spotted in London.
On Sunday (December 8), Sheikh Hasina, the ousted leader, held a virtual meeting with party activists at the Impression Venue Hall in East London. Several ministers, state ministers, MPs, and a former cabinet secretary from her regime were present.
Among those there were former Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdur Rahman, former State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, former MP Habibur Rahman Habib, and former Cabinet Secretary Kabir Bin Anwar.
This was the first public appearance of these individuals since the fall of the Awami government on August 5. All of them face multiple legal cases and are under travel restrictions.
The fugitives include Abdur Rahman, former MP for Faridpur-1 constituency; Shafiqur Rahman, former MP for Sylhet-2; and Habibur Rahman Habib, former MP for Sylhet-3. Additionally, Kabir Bin Anwar was appointed co-chairman of the Awami League's election steering committee on January 5.
It is worth mentioning that during the July-August student and public protests, Sheikh Hasina fled to India after the killing of at least 1,581 people under her regime's directives. In the efforts to oust the authoritarian government, nearly 31,000 people were injured, with many losing limbs or eyes.
