State Mourning of Advisor Hassan Ariff Declared on Monday
An official day of state mourning has been declared on Monday (December 23) to honour the death of AF Hassan Ariff, Advisor to the Ministry of Land, Civil Aviation, and Tourism of the interim government.
This information was announced in a circular signed by Cabinet Secretary Dr Sheikh Abdur Rashid on Sunday (December 22).
The circular states that the government has decided to observe state mourning on Monday (December 23) to mark the passing of AF Hassan Ariff, Advisor to the Ministry of Land and the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism of the People's Republic of Bangladesh's interim government.
It further mentions that on this occasion, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all government, semi-government, autonomous institutions, educational establishments, private buildings, and at Bangladesh missions abroad on Monday.
Additionally, special prayers will be held at all mosques across Bangladesh for the eternal peace of the deceased. Other religious institutions will also organize special prayers for his soul.
Earlier on Friday (December 20) at 3:10 pm, AF Hassan Ariff passed away following a cardiac arrest. He was 83 years old at the time of his death.
The first funeral prayer for Hassan Ariff was held on Friday (December 20) after Isha prayers at Baitul Aman Mosque in Dhanmondi 7. The second prayer took place on Saturday (December 21) at 11 am at the High Court premises, and the third one was held at the Secretariat on Saturday (December 21) afternoon.
His body is currently preserved at the mortuary of the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka. After his daughter returns from Canada, he will be laid to rest at the Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard in Mirpur on Monday.
Notably, Hassan Ariff was sworn in as an adviser to the interim government on August 8. He also served as an adviser for the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, the Ministry of Land, and the Ministry of Religious Affairs during the caretaker government led by Fakhruddin Ahmed. Additionally, he served as the Attorney General from 2001 to April 28, 2005.
Born on July 10, 1941, in Kolkata, Hassan Ariff completed his secondary and higher secondary education at St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. He later earned a bachelor's and L.L.B degree from the University of Calcutta.
In 1967, he was enrolled as a lawyer at the Calcutta High Court. Subsequently, he moved to Dhaka and began practising at the Bangladesh High Court. In 1970, he was enrolled as an advocate of the High Court.
