A recent report from the Bangladesh Passengers' Welfare Association has highlighted the alarming rise in road-related fatalities and injuries in 2024. The report reveals that 6,359 road accidents occurred across the country, resulting in 8,543 deaths and 12,608 injuries.

Additionally, the report documents 497 railway accidents, which led to 512 deaths and 315 injuries. On waterways, 118 accidents were recorded, causing 182 deaths, and 267 injuries, and leaving 155 people missing.

In total, across all forms of transportation—road, rail, and waterways—there were 6,974 accidents, resulting in 9,237 deaths and 13,190 injuries. Motorcycle accidents were particularly deadly, accounting for 2,570 deaths and 3,151 injuries.

The report also notes a significant rise in accidents over the past decade. The number of motorcycles on the road has grown from 1.5 million to 6 million, contributing to the increase in accidents. The report also highlights the entry of 6 million battery-powered rickshaws and an increasing number of smaller vehicles, further aggravating the road safety situation. Compared to 2023, road accidents in 2024 rose by 1.54%, fatalities by 7.50%, and injuries by 17.73%.

Among those killed in road accidents were 168 law enforcement officers, 1,952 drivers, 1,879 pedestrians, 622 transport workers, 755 students, 126 teachers, 1,206 women, 658 children, 48 journalists, 17 doctors, 16 freedom fighters, one film actor, 6 lawyers, 12 engineers, and 215 political party members.

The report identifies the most common types of accidents: 50.84% involved pedestrians being run over by vehicles, 24.39% were head-on collisions, 18.92% resulted from vehicles losing control and falling into ditches, and 0.73% involved train-vehicle collisions. National highways, regional highways, and feeder roads were the sites of the majority of accidents, with 35.67%, 21.66%, and 35.81% respectively.

The causes of these accidents include reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, poor road conditions, unfit vehicles, negligence by both drivers and pedestrians, drug use, lack of sidewalks, traffic law violations, and the irresponsibility of road-related officials.

The report emphasizes the urgent need for improved road safety measures. It calls for the swift enactment of a road safety law with effective implementation, the establishment of a road safety wing within the Ministry of Road Transport, and better governance. Additionally, it stresses the importance of road signs, markings, zebra crossings, proper lighting, and the introduction of modern public transportation systems as crucial steps in reducing accidents and saving lives.
