The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sent a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs requesting the removal of Saima Wazed Putul, the daughter of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, from her position as the Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO).
The letter was sent on Sunday (January 19).
Earlier on January 15, the ACC decided to investigate the corruption-related appointment of Saima Wazed Putul as the WHO Regional Director.
The Director-General of the ACC, Mohammad Akhtar Hossain, stated that despite lacking the required qualifications, Putul was appointed to the position of WHO Regional Director due to the influence of Sheikh Hasina.
Additionally, the ACC has filed a case against Putul for alleged misuse of power and corruption in the allocation of plots in the Purbachol area.
Meanwhile, on October 30 of the previous year, the Chief Advisor's Press Wing announced that the Bangladeshi government no longer wished to work with the WHO through Putul due to financial and criminal cases against her. Consequently, a letter was sent to the WHO to work directly with the organization instead.
It is worth mentioning that Saima Wazed Putul was appointed as the WHO Regional Director for Southeast Asia in February 2024.
