The government has announced plans to nationalise all registered Ebtedayee madrasahs across the country in phases.
SM Masudul Haque, Joint Secretary of the Technical and Madrasah Division under the Ministry of Education, announced on Tuesday. The declaration follows ongoing demonstrations by Ebtedayee madrasah teachers at Shahbagh since Sunday, where they demanded job nationalisation.
The protests escalated on Sunday when a group of teachers attempted to march towards the chief adviser's official residence to press their demands. Law enforcement officers intervened, using at least two sound grenades and water cannons to disperse the demonstrators, leaving at least five people injured.
