The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) failed to locate the existence of Shuchona Foundation, an organization reportedly founded by Saima Wazed Putul, daughter of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, during a raid at its listed address.

On Wednesday (January 29) afternoon, the ACC had announced its plan to conduct a raid on the foundation. However, later, ACC Deputy Director Akhtarul Islam stated that when they searched the listed address in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area, they found no trace of Shuchona Foundation.

Saima Wazed is currently the Regional Director for the World Health Organization (WHO) South-East Asia. Last Sunday, the ACC alleged that at the time of her nomination for the WHO post, she was a Canadian citizen, and the information she provided regarding her qualifications was inaccurate. The commission also claimed that there are credible allegations of corruption against her.

Furthermore, the ACC stated that Saima Wazed used Shuchona Foundation to receive gifts and misappropriate funds from various social and business organizations.

On November 24, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), the financial crime watchdog of Bangladesh Bank, had ordered the suspension (freeze) of the bank accounts of Shuchona Foundation.

The ACC also alleged that Saima Wazed influenced the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to illegally exempt the foundation from paying due taxes on received funds.
