However, he acknowledged that occasional outages still occur during peak summer hours due to technical and logistical constraints.

Replying to a scripted question from treasury bench lawmaker SM Jahangir Hossain (Dhaka-18), the Minister stated that the country’s total power generation capacity has reached 32,332 megawatts (MW), with grid-based capacity specifically standing at 28,919 MW.

He noted that as of March 2026, daily generation averages between 14,500 MW and 15,000 MW depending on the prevailing demand.

Despite the surplus in capacity, the Minister explained that uninterrupted supply remains a challenge during the summer.

He attributed these occasional disruptions to a shortage of primary fuel for generation, limitations in existing transmission and distribution infrastructure, scheduled maintenance, and seasonal storms or heavy rainfall.

During these peak periods, he noted, it is sometimes impossible to maintain a constant supply at the required levels.

To address these issues, Minister Mahmood highlighted several measures being spearheaded by the Power Division, including diversifying energy sources and prioritizing the stabilization of the primary energy supply.

He also revealed that a 180-day action plan has been formulated in alignment with the government’s election manifesto to modernize the sector and meet growing national demand.
