Bangladesh and Bhutan have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral ties, with a strategic focus on renewable energy and trade to catalyze regional economic growth.
The interest was expressed during a meeting between Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir and Bhutanese Ambassador Dasho Karma Hamu Dorji at the Bangladesh Secretariat today.
During the discussions, the Commerce Minister highlighted that despite its vast potential, South Asia remains one of the world's least integrated regions.
He emphasized the urgent need to boost intra-regional trade, which currently represents only a small fraction of the total trade volume.
To address this, Muktadir proposed joint ventures in the energy sector, specifically suggesting hydroelectric projects and expanded solar energy cooperation to leverage Bhutan’s significant hydropower resources and the two nations' geographical proximity.
Ambassador Dorji welcomed the initiatives, noting that the logistical convenience of the Burimari land port makes bilateral trade highly cost-effective.
She also pointed to the strong people-to-people connections, particularly in education, where Bhutanese medical students in Bangladesh serve as a bridge for mutual trust.
Both officials expressed optimism that this strengthened cooperation will lead to sustainable economic integration across the region.
The meeting was attended by senior officials including Additional Secretary Ayesha Akter and Bhutanese Minister Counsellor Dawa Tshering.
