Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed informed Parliament on Tuesday that 464 murder cases and 666 rape cases have been filed nationwide since the current government took office.
Responding to a tabled question from NCP MP Abul Hasnat (Hasnat Abdullah), the Minister detailed that 604 individuals have been arrested in connection with murder cases and 530 in rape cases. Among them, 11 persons in murder cases and 71 in rape cases have been released on bail.
The Home Minister assured the House that these cases are being investigated "very intensively to ensure strict punishment for all the accused responsible for serious crimes like murder and rape."
He also announced that a crackdown on drugs and online gambling will commence after April 30.
Addressing a question from Jamaat-e-Islami MP Md. Mujibur Rahman, the Minister characterized land grabbing, extortion, and illegal activities as heinous crimes harmful to society.
He remarked, “When the fascist Awami League government was in power for more than 15 years continuously, people became fed up with their loyal terrorist forces due to land grabbing, water and sand grabbing, extortion in various sectors, tender rigging and various illegal activities.”
He noted that because the current government has adopted a "zero tolerance policy," those involved have been brought under the law quickly, leading to a significant reduction in such crimes.
Regarding the manpower of law enforcement, the Minister informed ruling party lawmaker Md Jahander Ali Miha that 2.18 lakh posts are currently vacant in the Bangladesh Police.
This includes 207,745 police posts, 8,047 non-police posts, and 2,762 outsourcing positions. To address this, 14,500 new posts are being created, comprising 500 ASPs, 4,000 SIs (unarmed), and 10,000 constables.
He added that recruitment has already begun for 2,703 constable vacancies, and 2,000 ASIs will be directly recruited.
Finally, in response to a query from Jamaat MP Shahjahan Chowdhury, the Home Minister stated that the investigation report of the Disappearance Commission is preserved with the National Human Rights Commission.
He emphasized that “all kinds of assistance including legal assistance are being provided to the families of the victims.”
