The main construction work of ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel’ under the river Karnaphuli in Chattogram was inaugurated on Sunday (February 24).
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the project work through TBM machine at 11 am.
The cost of the construction work of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel is 9 thousand 880 crore 40 lakh taka. Of this Bangladesh government is providing 3 thousand 967 crore 21 lakh taka while government of China will assist 5 thousand 913 crore 19 lakh taka.
The length of the key tunnel is 3.4 kilometers which comprises two tubes and there will be 5.35 kilometers connecting road and 727 meters over bridge at the west and east end.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel- the dream tunnel of the young generation is being constructed under the river Karnaphuli with a view to develop communication network in country’s south-east region and to connect it with Asian Highway Network. This tunnel will connect Anawara upazila with Chattogram city area.
The overall progress of the project is 32 percent and it will complete by December 2022.
If the project is implemented then the direct communication with Cox’s Bazar will be established through bypassing Chattogram city from Dhaka. Through this the time will reduce and the traffic congestion in Chattogram city will also ease.
