Due to allegations of corruption, a Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on four members of the Sheikh family, including Sheikh Tonmoy, the son of Sheikh Helal and former Member of Parliament for Bagerhat-2.
The other individuals include Sheikh Salahuddin Jewel, a former MP from Khulna-2; Sheikh Sohel, a Presidium Member of the Awami Jubo League and former BCB director; and Sheikh Jalal Uddin Rubel, who is involved in the shipping industry. All four are cousins of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The order was issued on Thursday by Judge Zakir Hossain Galib of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court, following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to ACC spokesperson Akhtarul Islam, the petition was submitted by ACC Deputy Director Mostafizur Rahman. The commission requested the travel ban, citing concerns that the accused individuals were attempting to flee the country amid ongoing investigations into corruption and illegal wealth accumulation during the tenure of the previous government.
The court granted the travel ban in the interest of ensuring a fair and uninterrupted investigation.
Sheikh Salahuddin Jewel, a son of Sheikh Abu Naser—the younger brother of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman—served as a member of parliament for Khulna-2 in both 2018 and 2024. His brothers, Sheikh Sohel and Sheikh Jalal Uddin Rubel, hold influential positions in politics and business, respectively. Sheikh Tonmoy, son of Sheikh Helal, also served as an MP for Bagerhat-2 in 2014 and 2018.
