The interim government of Bangladesh has announced plans to set up a land-based LNG terminal to ensure uninterrupted gas supply to factories across the country.
Speaking to journalists in Doha on Thursday (April 24), Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, said, "Many investors have expressed concern that they are unable to establish factories due to a lack of gas. To address this issue, we aim to establish a land-based LNG terminal as quickly as possible to import sufficient gas from abroad."
He added that the proposal was discussed with Qatar Energy during Professor Yunus's official visit to Doha.
Shafiqul mentioned that the terminal will be established soon to ensure a stable gas supply to factories across Bangladesh.
Commenting on the visit, Shafiqul described it as highly productive, calling it "one of the most successful and remarkable trips."
He also expressed optimism that the visit would boost Bangladesh's global reputation and attract increased foreign investment.
Highlighting the country's economic recovery, he noted that under the previous government, Bangladesh's foreign debt had reached USD 3.2 billion. However, the interim government has since reduced that figure to USD 600 million.
"We expect to repay the remaining debt within the next few months. This sends a strong positive signal to the international community that Bangladesh is ready for business," he said.
Following the conclusion of his four-day visit, Professor Yunus departed Doha for Rome on Friday to attend the funeral of Pope Francis.
