Former Member of Parliament (MP) Momtaz Begum, representing the Manikganj-2 constituency, has been arrested by law enforcement agencies. The confirmation was provided by Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media and Public Relations Department.
He stated that members of the Detective Branch (DB) of the police arrested former MP Momtaz Begum from the Dhanmondi area of the capital late Monday night (May 12). Talebur Rahman also mentioned that she is currently being held at the DB office on Minto Road.
Confirming the arrest, DB Joint Commissioner Mohammad Nasirul Islam said, "Momtaz Begum was hiding in a house behind Dhanmondi Star Kabab. She was arrested from there at around 11:45 PM. She has multiple cases against her, including murder charges."
Police sources indicated that several murder cases have been filed against Momtaz Begum in connection with the anti-discrimination student movement. Police have also stated that she will be presented in court on Tuesday, and a remand application will be filed.
It is noteworthy that Momtaz Begum, a singer who gained both praise and criticism for her songs about former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the National Parliament, most recently contested the 12th National Parliament election from the Manikganj-2 constituency under the Awami League's "boat" symbol. However, she lost to independent candidate Dewan Zahid Ahmed (Tulu).
Previously, in 2009, Momtaz Begum was nominated as a Member of Parliament for the reserved women's seat in the 9th National Parliament representing the Bangladesh Awami League. She also served as an MP after being elected from the Manikganj-2 constituency in 2014.
