During the July–August mass uprising, numerous civilians were allegedly killed by the then-government led by Sheikh Hasina. Following her removal from power, Hasina reportedly fled to India. Since the establishment of the interim government, a total of 606 murder cases have been filed in various police stations and courts across the country, accusing Sheikh Hasina and her associates of mass killings. In each of these cases, she has been named as the primary accused.
In Dhaka alone, 388 cases were registered across 50 police stations. The highest number of cases—112—were filed at Jatrabari Police Station. Other stations include Mohammadpur with 13 cases, Mirpur 16, Dhanmondi 9, Shahbagh 8, Wari 5, Chawkbazar 6, Uttara West 12, and Uttara East 8.
Outside Dhaka, the breakdown is as follows: 24 cases in the Chattogram division, 12 in Rajshahi, 9 in Khulna, 8 in Mymensingh, 7 in Rangpur, 5 in Sylhet, and 6 in Barishal.
Despite more than eight months under the Yunus-led interim government, police have not yet concluded investigations into any of these cases. However, law enforcement officials deny that the process is unusually slow.
According to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) spokesperson Talebur Rahman, several investigations are nearing completion, and charge sheets will be submitted to the courts soon.
Prominent lawyer and human rights activist Sara Hossain stated that a designated official should be assigned to oversee these cases to ensure proper handling and resolution.
"There should be transparency regarding the current status of the investigations and what their outcomes might be," she said. "The government must clearly communicate its position and progress on these cases to the public."
