The High Court has sentenced Maulana Taj Uddin and Jewel to life imprisonment in the 2001 Ramna Batamul bomb attack case, revising their earlier death sentences.
The verdict was delivered on Tuesday (May 13) by the High Court bench of Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasreen Akter.
Nine other convicts in the same case had their sentences reduced to 10 years in prison, along with a fine of BDT 50,000 each.
The attack occurred on April 14, 2001, during the Bengali New Year celebrations organized by Chhayanaut at Ramna Batamul in Dhaka. The bombing killed nine people instantly, with one more victim dying later in hospital.
Following the attack, Sergeant Amal Chandra Chanda from the Nilkhet Police Outpost filed two cases—one for murder and another under the Explosives Act—at the Ramna Police Station on the same day. After years of legal proceedings, the trial court delivered its verdict in the murder case on June 23, 2014.
The case was then forwarded to the High Court for review, including the death reference, jail appeals, and criminal appeals filed by the convicts.
