South Asia, including Bangladesh, was once again shaken by a 4.9 magnitude earthquake. The Bangladesh Meteorological Observation Team reported that the quake originated in Myanmar.
On Monday (December 1) night, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.9. Its epicenter was in Falam, Myanmar, at a depth of 106.8 kilometers. The tremor was felt in Cox's Bazar, the adjacent Chittagong Hill Tracts, and Chittagong city in Bangladesh.
Furthermore, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), an international earthquake information provider, stated on its website that the 4.9 magnitude quake's epicenter was in Myanmar.
he Bangladesh Meteorological Department provided the same information, citing the USGS, and noted on its website that the epicenter was 431 kilometers away from Dhaka.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Observation Team shared on Facebook that the earthquake occurred at 12:55:16 AM (local time), with a magnitude of 4.9 (Richter scale) and a depth of 106.8 kilometers.
The observation team also stated that the affected regions included Myanmar, Northeast India, and the Chittagong, Dhaka, Barisal, and Sylhet divisions of Bangladesh. However, no reports of damage have been received yet.
Local residents of Cox's Bazar city, Ukhiya, Chakaria, and Chittagong reported that the tremor was not very strong and lasted only a few seconds. Many people rushed out of their homes. The late-night event caused some panic in the area.
This is the eighth time an earthquake has been felt in Bangladesh, starting with the 5.7 magnitude quake in Narsingdi on Friday, November 21. Since then, a series of mild tremors have been continuously felt.
