The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has launched a new enforcement initiative using CCTV footage and still images to issue auto-generated notices to traffic law violators across the capital.
Authorities warned that failure to appear or pay fines following these notices could result in court summons or arrest warrants.
According to a public notice signed Sunday (May 3) by Acting DMP Commissioner Md. Sarwar, the move is part of a broader effort to modernize traffic management, reduce congestion, and improve civic services.
Digital Prosecution and Fines
The DMP’s traffic division is identifying violations—including unregistered vehicles, lack of fitness certificates, and illegal parking—through video surveillance.
These infractions are processed via e-traffic prosecution software, and notices are sent directly to the addresses of vehicle owners and drivers via registered mail.
Recipients are required to report to DMP Headquarters or their respective traffic zones to settle fines through designated banks or mobile banking platforms.
Legal Consequences for Non-Compliance
The DMP highlighted that if owners or drivers ignore these notices, legal proceedings will be initiated through Special Metropolitan Magistrates. This may include:
Legal Summons: A formal order to appear in court.
Arrest Warrants: Issued for those who consistently evade the automated prosecution process.
Warnings Against Fraud
The public notice also cautioned citizens against potential scams. Officials clarified that all financial transactions regarding these cases must be handled through official channels. Residents are advised not to share personal information or make payments to individuals or unofficial groups claiming to represent the CCTV camera enforcement unit.
AI-Enabled Surveillance
The DMP has recently upgraded its infrastructure with AI-powered CCTV cameras at key intersections. This technology is being used to automatically detect and prosecute specific offenses, such as:
- Running red lights or jumping signals.
- Crossing stop lines or driving on the wrong side of the road.
- Illegal parking and blocking left-turn lanes.
- Creating obstructions by picking up passengers in unauthorized areas.
The initiative marks a significant shift toward digital enforcement as Dhaka attempts to bring order to its notoriously congested streets.
