Bangladesh’s prisons are set to become self-sufficient in electricity through a new solar power initiative. Under the direction of the Prisons Directorate, solar panels will be installed on the rooftops of prison buildings across the country to meet internal energy demands.
According to a press release issued by the Prisons Directorate on Friday (May 8), any electricity generated beyond the prisons' requirements will be supplied directly to the national grid.
Strategic Partnership
A formal agreement for this project was signed on May 5, 2026, between the Prisons Directorate and Engen Technology Limited.
The project will utilize a net metering system, allowing produced solar energy to flow into the national transmission lines while simultaneously powering prison facilities.
Zero-Investment Model
The Directorate highlighted several key aspects of the initiative:
Private Investment: The project requires no financial investment from the prison authorities or the government; it is being implemented entirely through private sector funding.
Economic Savings: By generating their own power and contributing to the grid, the government expects significant financial savings in the power sector.
Renewable Energy Goals: The move aligns with the government's recent directives to accelerate renewable energy production nationwide.
Prison officials stated that this multifaceted program is part of an ongoing effort to transform correctional facilities into more productive and sustainable institutions.
