President Mohammed Shahabuddin has successfully undergone an emergency angioplasty and stent placement after a significant block was detected in his heart during a routine health check-up in the United Kingdom. His condition is currently reported as stable and satisfactory.
Colonel Dr. A.K.M. Faizul Haque, the President’s personal physician currently with him in the UK, confirmed the development to the Bangabhaban Press Wing.
According to Dr. Haque, the President underwent an angiogram on Tuesday, May 12, at the Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, under the supervision of Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Stephen Hoole.
When a major blockage was discovered in one of his coronary arteries, doctors immediately performed an angioplasty and inserted a stent (commonly known as a "ring").
Recovery and Medical History
President Shahabuddin is currently under close observation by a team of specialists at the hospital. He has requested the people of Bangladesh to pray for his swift recovery.
The Head of State has a history of cardiac issues; he previously underwent open-heart surgery at the National University Hospital in Singapore in October 2023.
Since then, he has been receiving follow-up care at Royal Papworth, a facility globally renowned for pioneering heart transplants and world-class cardiac research.
President Shahabuddin departed Dhaka for London on May 9 for his scheduled medical examinations. Following his recovery and the completion of his check-up, he is expected to return to Bangladesh on May 18.
