Today, July 16, the nation observes the historic "July Martyrs' Day," a solemn occasion dedicated to honoring those who sacrificed their lives during the transformative student-led protests of 2024.
It was on this day two years ago that the movement reached a pivotal turning point.
In Rangpur, Abu Sayed, a student at Begum Rokeya University and a prominent coordinator of the quota reform movement, was killed by police gunfire.
The image of Sayed standing courageously with his arms outstretched before police became the enduring symbol of the resistance, igniting nationwide outrage and galvanizing public support.
The Day of Sacrifice
The violence of July 16, 2024, was not confined to Rangpur. Across the country, the protest for reform was met with a heavy-handed response.
In Chittagong: College student and student leader Wasim Akram, Omar Gani MES College student Faisal Ahmed, and furniture worker Md. Faruq lost their lives.
In the Capital: Clashes in the Science Lab area resulted in the deaths of street vendor Md. Shahjahan and Sabuj Ali.
According to various reports, at least six people were killed on this day. The ensuing unrest led to mass protests, the closure of educational institutions, the evacuation of residential halls, and the postponement of national examinations.
What began as a student movement quickly widened, drawing in political parties, professionals, and the general public, ultimately evolving into a mass uprising that led to the collapse of the former regime.
National Commemoration
In observance of the day, extensive programs are being held across Bangladesh, including discussion meetings, prayer sessions, and memorial services to honor the memory and sacrifice of the martyrs.
In a formal message, Prime Minister Tareque Rahman paid deep tribute to the fallen, stating, "Abu Sayed's sacrifice is a symbol of the nation's resistance against injustice." He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the dignity of the martyrs' blood by building a democratic state.
President Md. Sahabuddin also issued a separate statement, honoring the sacrifices made during the July mass uprising. He called upon all citizens to work together toward building a non-discriminatory, democratic, and accountable Bangladesh.
Since last year, July 16 has been commemorated as "July Martyrs' Day"—a day to reflect on the immense sacrifices made in the pursuit of democracy, justice, and human rights.
