A total of 54 individuals, all reportedly affiliated with the Awami League, have been detained in connection with an attack on Hasnat Abdullah, the southern regional chief organiser of the National Citizens Party (NCP).
The incident occurred on Sunday evening in Gazipur's Chandana Chowrasta area as Hasnat was returning to Dhaka in a microbus after attending an event. According to eyewitnesses, a group of individuals attacked his vehicle with sharp weapons, shattering the glass and injuring his elbow. The attackers reportedly pursued his car until he took shelter inside the Islamic University of Technology (IUT) in Board Bazar. He later safely reached Dhaka.
Following the attack, a large number of students gathered in front of IUT, and NCP activists staged a torch rally that night demanding justice.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police's Additional Deputy Commissioner Rabiul Hasan confirmed that multiple police teams conducted overnight raids and arrested 54 Awami League activists. Two others were detained shortly after the attack. So far, no formal complaint or case has been filed regarding the incident.
Officer-in-Charge of Bason Police Station, Shaheen Khan, added that 10 to 12 individuals on motorcycles had followed Hasnat's vehicle and began throwing stones after it passed Chandana Chowrasta, causing the injuries.
Police officials arrived at the scene shortly after the attack and initiated immediate operations to apprehend those responsible.
