High tension gripped the Ramrampur border area in Bakshiganj, Jamalpur, after the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) successfully thwarted an attempt by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) to push an unidentified elderly man into Bangladesh.
The standoff led to a heated altercation during a border flag meeting when a BSF member mentioned opening fire.
BGB personnel immediately issued a fierce counter-response, stating, "Why did you talk about shooting? You have bullets, do we not? If you open fire, will we just sit back idly?"
The incident began on Wednesday morning at the zero line of the Ramrampur border.
Local sources and BGB officials reported that personnel from India’s Nandirchar BSF camp attempted to forcibly push a man, estimated to be around 60 years old, across the border.
Upon receiving the news, troops from the Jamalpur 35 BGB battalion, backed by local residents, rushed to the scene and established defensive positions.
Due to their swift resistance, the push-in was halted, leaving the individual stranded at the zero line.
To defuse the escalating situation, a flag meeting was called at 10:30 am, led by the Assistant Director of Jamalpur 35 BGB and an Inspector from the Nandirchar BSF camp.
The prolonged talks ended in a deadlock as both border forces refused to accept the man as a citizen of their respective countries.
The BSF ultimately walked away and returned to their camp, refusing to take the individual back.
According to eyewitnesses, even after the formal meeting ended in a stalemate, BSF personnel made several more attempts to push the elderly man into Bangladeshi territory.
However, their efforts were repeatedly foiled by the unyielding vigilance of BGB members and local villagers who remained stationed at the border.
Eventually, both sides retreated to their standard positions, leaving the man stranded in no-man's land.
Confirming the standoff, the Commanding Officer of Jamalpur 35 BGB, Lieutenant Colonel Hasanur Rahman, said, "Attempts at illegal push-ins have been observed through this border for the past few days. This morning, the BSF pushed a man from India to the zero line. Our members, along with the local villagers, have taken up positions there. We are closely monitoring the situation and necessary actions will be taken."
