Saint Martin’s, the country’s only coral-rich island, is reeling under the impact of incessant heavy rainfall and a significant tidal surge, leaving vast low-lying areas submerged and residents in a state of alarm.
Large, turbulent waves from the Bay of Bengal have been relentlessly battering the coastline, compounding the distress caused by three consecutive days of heavy downpours that began on July 7, affecting Cox’s Bazar, Teknaf, and Saint Martin’s.
The situation remains volatile as gusty winds from the northeast keep the sea in a churn, with frequent shifts in wind direction heightening uncertainty.
Residents Face Hardship
Local residents report that the rising tide has breached homes in the lower areas of the island. With adverse weather conditions prevailing, most residents are confined to their homes, venturing out only for dire emergencies.
The rough sea has also brought local fishing activity to a complete standstill, severely impacting the livelihoods of the island’s fishermen.
Abu Taleb, a long-time resident, described the dire situation: "The water level in the Bay of Bengal has risen by an estimated 4 to 5 feet compared to normal levels due to the relentless rain and the turbulent sea. Huge waves are crashing onto the island one after another." He added that knee-deep water in several areas has severely disrupted movement across the island.
Transport and Supply Chain Disruptions
The weather has paralyzed the island's connectivity with the mainland. Abdur Rashid, President of the Saint Martin’s Service Trawler Cooperative Association, confirmed that all trawler operations have been suspended since last Thursday. Service will only resume once official warnings are lifted.
Island Chairman Fayezul Islam warned of a looming humanitarian challenge: "Many homes have been submerged. The suspension of vessel operations between Teknaf and Saint Martin’s has already triggered a shortage of essential daily commodities on the island."
Administrative Response
Teknaf Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) S. M. Anik Chowdhury stated that the administration is closely monitoring the situation.
"With trawler services halted and the tidal water levels elevated by persistent heavy rain, we have taken all necessary precautionary measures. We are advising all residents to remain indoors and prioritize their safety as we monitor the weather conditions," he said.
