Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday instructed the relevant authorities to finalize initiatives aimed at restoring the capital's Dhanmondi and Gulshan lakes within their designated schedules, placing strong emphasis on synchronized efforts to safeguard urban water bodies and the environment.
The directive was issued during a high-level review session focused on the development and revitalization of Dhanmondi and Gulshan lakes alongside the setup of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), convened at the Cabinet Division conference room inside the Bangladesh Secretariat.
During the gathering, administrators updated the premier regarding a Dhaka South City Corporation initiative dedicated to revamping Dhanmondi Lake, establishing Nazrul Sarobar, and introducing STPs to upgrade municipal sanitation infrastructure.
In addition to the physical restoration plans, the meeting finalized a decisive strategy to sever all unauthorized sewage and waste dumping conduits emptying into Gulshan and Baridhara lakes over the upcoming six months.
Officials also reported that the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK) is slated to spearhead a comprehensive cleaning, enhancement, and aesthetic upgrade campaign across Gulshan Lake.
Evaluating multiple conceptual blueprints for lake rejuvenation, enhanced sanitation management, and broader STP integration across commercial and residential structures, the Prime Minister insisted on punctual project execution alongside a unified institutional framework to preserve Dhaka's environmental equilibrium and natural water resources.
The conference saw participation from key government figures, including State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Mir Shahe Alam, State Minister for Housing and Public Works Ahmed Sohel Monjur, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator M Safiqul Islam Khan, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator M Abdus Salam, and Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar, alongside other senior officials.
