A remarkable disparity has been observed in the country's bank deposits, where just two areas in the capital—Motijheel and Gulshan—hold nearly 20% of the nation's total deposits.
According to the latest statistics from the Bangladesh Bank, these two police station jurisdictions continue to dominate as the financial and commercial nerve centers of Dhaka.
In contrast, the Bhashantek police station, located next to affluent Gulshan, holds the lowest amount of total deposits—a mere 0.01% of the country’s total.
Motijheel and Gulshan: The Financial Hubs
As of the end of the Fiscal Year 2023-24 (June 30, 2025), the total bank deposits in the Motijheel and Gulshan police stations stood at BDT 3,967.2473 billion (3,96,724.73 crore taka).
- Motijheel accounts for 10.2% of the country's total deposits.
- Gulshan accounts for 9.7% of the country's total deposits.
Although many banks have relocated their head offices to Gulshan, Motijheel retains its supremacy as a transaction center due to the large volume of important and long-standing business accounts remaining there.
Meanwhile, Gulshan, hosting numerous multinational and large corporate offices, also generates substantial transaction volumes.
Bhashantek: The Contrasting Figure
In a striking comparison, the Bhashantek police station holds an insignificant portion of the nation's total deposits, amounting to only BDT 2.4946 billion (249.46 crore taka).
Bankers explain that Bhashantek is a relatively new and densely populated area, primarily inhabited by lower-income residents.
Lacking any large commercial establishments or industrial factories, the main source of bank deposits here is limited to small businesses and personal savings.
Consequently, both the number of bank accounts and the deposit volume are naturally much lower.
Data analysis shows that Bhashantek had 5,725 bank accounts at the end of June 2025, a slight increase of 51 accounts from the 5,654 recorded a year prior (June 2024).
Over the year, deposits grew by only BDT 5.04 crore (50.4 million taka).
Industry experts believe this geographical distribution serves as a critical indicator for understanding Dhaka's commercial balance.
Motijheel and Gulshan remain the dominant financial centers, while areas like Bhashantek are just beginning their journey toward financial development.
