The results of the West Bengal Assembly elections have sparked intense political excitement across the state, with voters showing keen interest in the fates of celebrity candidates. This election saw significant shifts in the political fortunes of several popular film and television personalities.
The Winners
Rudranil Ghosh (BJP): Contesting from the Shibpur constituency in Howrah, the actor secured a notable victory. He defeated TMC candidate Rana Chatterjee by a margin of approximately 16,000 votes. Having transitioned from leftist politics to the TMC and finally to the BJP, this win marks a major milestone in his political journey.
Hiran Chatterjee (BJP): The actor demonstrated strong support in the Shyampur constituency of Howrah. He defeated his TMC rival by a decisive margin of over 22,000 votes.
The Defeats
Soham Chakraborty (TMC): It was a disappointing result for the actor in the Karimpur constituency of Nadia. Although he led in the early stages of counting, the momentum shifted in the final rounds, leading to a defeat against the BJP candidate by nearly 10,000 votes.
Sayantika Banerjee (TMC): Despite her previous success in a by-election, the actress suffered a major setback in the Baranagar constituency. She was defeated by the BJP’s Sajal Ghosh by a significant margin.
Raj Chakraborty (TMC): The renowned filmmaker faced a tough battle in Barrackpore, where he lost to BJP candidate Kaustav Bagchi by over 15,000 votes. This is being viewed as a significant blow to his political career.
The election results have ignited a fresh debate on the impact of "star power" in politics. While some new faces have emerged victorious, several established celebrities found that fame does not always translate into votes on the political battlefield.
