Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury said that the government is set to introduce a special welfare card for cultural activists, aimed at providing them with institutional support and social security coverage.
The Minister disclosed while addressing a special cultural programme titled “Nrityageeti O Probondho Path” at the Bangladesh National Museum on Thursday.
The event was organized to commemorate the birth anniversaries of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore and National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury emphasized that culture is "not merely a source of entertainment but the foundation of a nation’s identity, values and civilization."
He stated that the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is actively implementing programmes to expand cultural activities nationwide while ensuring the "dignity and welfare of artists and cultural workers."
Reflecting on the legacy of the two literary giants, the Minister remarked that the literature, music, and philosophy of Tagore and Nazrul had "established the spirit of humanity, equality and free thinking on the global stage."
Beyond welfare initiatives, the Minister highlighted the government's commitment to the nation's history, noting that effective measures are being taken to preserve archaeological sites, folk heritage, and historical landmarks.
He asserted that "protecting heritage means safeguarding the roots of the nation."
The commemorative programme featured vibrant dance performances by artistes from the troupe “Nrityanchal,” directed by renowned dancers Shibli Mohammad and Shamim Ara Nipa.
Additionally, academics presented essays exploring the literary and humanistic ideals championed by Tagore and Nazrul.
