Atishi Named Delhi's New Chief Minister, Replacing Kejriwal
Delhi Minister Atishi Marlena Singh is set to become the new Chief Minister after Arvind Kejriwal announced his resignation following a meeting with Lt. Governor VK Saxena this afternoon. The decision was made during a meeting of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders today.
At the meeting, AAP leader Dilip Pandey proposed that Mr. Kejriwal select the next chief minister. When Kejriwal suggested Atishi’s name, all AAP MLAs unanimously supported it, and Atishi was officially chosen as the legislative party leader, according to sources.
Atishi currently holds key portfolios in the Delhi government, including Education and Public Works Department (PWD). An Oxford University alumnus and Rhodes Scholar, she has played a significant role in AAP's flagship initiatives for transforming education in Delhi’s schools.
Representing the Kalkaji constituency, Atishi, 43, stepped into a ministerial role after Manish Sisodia was arrested in connection with a corruption case related to Delhi’s now-scrapped liquor policy. During this period, Atishi clarified the party’s stance and led several important initiatives.
On August 15, Mr. Kejriwal had selected her to hoist the national flag at the Delhi government's Independence Day ceremony, though the plan was blocked by Lt. Governor Saxena. Nonetheless, this appointment underscores the high level of trust the AAP leadership places in Atishi.
