Tulip Siddiq, the City Minister from the ruling Labour Party of the UK, has resigned from her position as Economic Secretary. She is the daughter of Sheikh Rehana, the sister of Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

This information was reported by British media outlet The Guardian on Tuesday (January 14).

According to the report, Tulip Siddiq stepped down from her ministerial post amid recurring questions regarding her financial ties with her aunt, Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Tulip Siddiq held the role of Economic Secretary to the UK Treasury, tasked with combating corruption in the country's financial sector.

Reuters reported that Tulip Siddiq submitted her resignation to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. However, in her resignation letter, she stated that an investigation found no evidence of ministerial misconduct by the adviser to the ministerial watchdog, Laurie Magnus.

Tulip Siddiq, a member of the British ruling Labour Party’s Cabinet, served as the Economic Secretary to the Treasury and City Minister. Her responsibilities included addressing internal corruption within the UK’s financial markets. However, she is now under investigation in her native Bangladesh, where allegations have surfaced against her and four family members for embezzling approximately 400 million USD from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project.

Additionally, allegations in the UK accuse Tulip Siddiq of accepting a free apartment from close associates of her aunt Sheikh Hasina during her tenure as a minister. Questions have been raised about whether this apartment was received in exchange for special favors.

In this context, Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK's main opposition Conservative Party, recently called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to dismiss Tulip Siddiq. Despite these calls, the MP for Hampstead and Highgate, Tulip Siddiq, claims she has done nothing wrong.

Meanwhile, the UK Anti-Corruption Coalition has issued a statement highlighting the serious "conflict of interest" posed by the allegations against Tulip Siddiq and her role in the British government. The coalition emphasized the significance of these issues, noting that Tulip Siddiq's responsibilities include making crucial decisions that affect the UK's international credibility and reputation, decisions that are now under scrutiny due to her alleged connections and the ongoing investigation by Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) involving her aunt, Sheikh Hasina.
