Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK's main opposition party, the Conservative Party, has urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to dismiss City Minister Tulip Siddiq.

According to a report by British news outlet BBC on Sunday (January 12), Tulip Siddiq, a member of the ruling Labour Cabinet, serves as the Economic Secretary to the Treasury and City Minister. Her role involves tackling financial corruption in the UK markets.

However, she is currently under investigation in her home country of Bangladesh, where she and four family members are accused of embezzling around $400 million from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project.

Additionally, there is controversy surrounding her residence in a flat allegedly gifted by her aunt, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's close associates.

The BBC reports that opposition leader Kemi Badenoch has called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to sack Tulip Siddiq. In a post on the social media platform X, Badenoch stated: "It’s time for Keir Starmer to dismiss Tulip Siddiq."

She further added that Prime Minister Starmer appointed his personal friend as the anti-corruption minister, who is now herself accused of corruption.

Badenoch emphasized that while the government should focus on addressing financial issues, Siddiq has become an obstacle in this regard. The Bangladesh government has also expressed serious concerns about her connections with Sheikh Hasina's administration.

Conservative MPs have also demanded Siddiq’s resignation. They have urged her to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the gifted flat or step down from her role as Treasury Minister.

Tory MP Bob Blackman stated that Siddiq must clarify her property transactions and explain what transpired. If she fails to do so, she cannot continue in her ministerial role.

Tulip Siddiq has denied any involvement in corruption and has requested an investigation into her conduct by the Independent Adviser on Ministerial Standards, Laurie Magnus. In a letter to Sir Laurie Magnus, she asserted, "I have done nothing wrong."

Prime Minister Starmer has expressed full confidence in Siddiq. A spokesperson for the Prime Minister also dismissed reports of a shortlist of possible replacements for Siddiq as "completely false."
